Taught drawing by E.J. Sullivan at Goldsmiths, Rhodes exhibited his first self-portrait at the Royal Academy aged just 16. A member of Eric Gill’s Ditchling community, where he learned lettering from Gill, Rhodes created the Lepanto Crucifix for Seville Cathedral and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1936. Though he lost much of his work in 1940, Rhodes is best remembered for his portraits, especially his powerful drawings of farm labourers for Piers Plowman.
